Egalitarian and Halakhik Judaism

The Masorti Movement

The Masorti Movement is a stream of Judaism which includes faith in God and combines connection to Jewish tradition and Halacha (Jewish law), alongside openness to the modern world and democratic-humanistic culture. Masorti Judaism sees the Halacha as a dynamic and evolving set of values and laws that must adapt to current conditions and circumstances that change with each generation.

The Masorti Movement is an Israeli movement in its essence and character, yet has an affinity with global Conservative Judaism. The Movement continues to be a home for many people throughout the country who wish to find a warm and welcoming Judaism, which combines faith, tradition, and a community framework rich in democratic Jewish values. It consists of Israelis from diverse backgrounds—young and old, native-born and immigrants, men and women, able and disabled. They are committed to creating communities that advocate for equality and inclusion.

The Masorti Foundation

The Masorti Foundation for Conservative Judaism is dedicated to supporting Israelis in building a Judaism that respects tradition and observance while adapting to modern Israeli life and promoting egalitarian practices. The foundation, based in New York City, champions a pluralistic, egalitarian, and democratic Israel by backing the Masorti Movement in Israel.

From its humble beginnings with just two Conservative synagogues—Emet V’Emunah Congregation in Jerusalem, founded in the mid-1930s, and Moriah Synagogue in Haifa, established in 1955—the movement has grown to nearly 80 congregations across Israel, spanning rural and urban areas. The Masorti Foundation has been instrumental in nurturing this growth for over 30 years.

The Masorti Movement in Israel tirelessly advocates for equal recognition from the Israeli government for all Jews, regardless of their conversion process or level of observance. They are affecting real societal change and the Masorti Foundation takes pride in supporting this transformative work that is crucial for Judaism in Israel and around the world.

Through education, dialogue, advocacy, and financial support, the Masorti Foundation enables Conservative Jews in the United States to actively participate in this historic and vital endeavor. Together, we enrich each other's lives, offer mutual support, and unite our voices as one: the voice of the Jewish People.
